Smalley forced to have surgery

Oldham Athletic midfielder Deane Smalley looks set to be sidelined until Christmas at the earliest.

The 20-year-old Latics star is set to have surgery on his troublesome back injury.

Oldham strengthened their midfield options with the signing of Joe Colbeck from Bradford City on transfer deadline day in anticipation of Smalley's surgery.

Boss Dave Penney also snapped up Leeds United defender Alan Sheehan on a month's loan on Tuesday.
