Porter takes the plaudits

Oldham manager John Sheridan paid tribute to Chris Porter after his first-half brace secured a surprise 2-0 win at League One leaders Nottingham Forest on Tuesday.

The injury-prone forward has struggled to make an impact since joining Latics from Bury in July 2005, and Sheridan is hoping the vital goals will give him a much needed confidence boost.

"Chris has been out for a long time, missed a lot of football, but he got two good goals and gave us something to hold on to," he said.

"I have always had faith in him to do a job for us, that was never in doubt."

Sheridan is also hoping the result will kick-start his side's disappointing season.

He added: "I don't think any of the teams we have played so far have been that much better than us, even though we find ourselves in the bottom half of the table.

"I think we can match any team in the division.

"It is three points, but we have played the team at the top of the table and we have beaten them. I am happy for the lads because they have shown what they can do.

"We have to stay positive and keep playing the way we have been playing. If we do that we will win more games than we lose."
