    Hughes released from jail

    20 Aug 2007 - 14:23:26

Oldham Athletic-bound striker Lee Hughes has been released from prison after serving half of a six-year sentence for causing death by dangerous driving.

The 31-year-old former Coventry and West Bromwich Albion frontman was jailed in August 2004 after crashing his car into another vehicle and causing the death of a father of four.

Hughes' contract with West Brom was terminated after his conviction, but he is now set to resurrect his career with the League One club.

Back in May, Latics chairman Barry Owen revealed his club was interested in signing Hughes.

"Oldham Athletic does not condone what happened and we are very sympathetic towards the family of the victim," he said.

"However, Lee Hughes is now nearing the end of his sentence and he has paid the price for what occurred.

"As far as the club is concerned, Lee deserves a second chance and we consider this a top-class signing.

"We would ask supporters and the general public not to pass moral judgement."
