Gamble fails for Latics

Oldham boss John Sheridan admitted his gamble didn't pay off after an experimental Latics side lost 1-0 to Chesterfield in the second round of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy. Sheridan made a number of changes to his starting line-up, but after a disappointing showing in front of the home fans, the Athletic boss is unlikely to keep faith with his cup side for Saturday's trip to Cheltenham. "I'm disappointed because I wanted to win the game and do well in the competition," he told the club's official website. "We weren't at the races in the first half and were very sloppy all round. "The fringe players have a lot of hard to work to do if they're going to force me to put them in the team. "It was a cup game and a bit of an experiment for me. I made quite a few changes and threw some players in and it just hasn't worked out."
