Abbot penalty hands Latics a draw

Published: 13 Mar 2010 - 19:17:45

Wycombe were on course for only their third away win of the season until Alan Bennett handled Abbott's volley and the Latics' striker hammered in from the spot. Oldham had taken the lead on the half hour when a deep free-kick was helped on to defender Reuben Hazell, who headed home from six yards. But Wycombe hit back strongly and Matt Harrold had a header cleared off the line before they pulled level. John Mousinho's shot struck an Oldham hand inside the box and Harrold confidently tucked away the resulting penalty. Second-from-bottom Wycombe then took control and were ahead after 49 minutes as Oldham keeper Dean Brill was left red-faced by Kevin Betsy, whose weak 20-yard shot squirmed through his grasp. Harrold could have added a vital third but Wycombe had an escape when Abbott fired straight at the keeper. Abbott's penalty rescued Oldham but they remain in trouble and manager Dave Penney again came under fire from the home fans.
