Woolford breaks Latics' resolve

Martyn Woolford snatched an 83rd-minute winner as Scunthorpe survived a Carling Cup scare against League One Oldham to triumph 2-1. Djeny Bembo - one of three debutants for Latics alongside strike partner Dean Kelly and on-loan Sunderland centre-back Jean Yves Mvoto - gave the visitors the lead midway through the first-half, but Jonathan Forte turned his constant threat into a goal for the npower Championship outfit with 25 minutes remaining. Woolford's winner came shortly after Oldham captain Dale Stephen had seen his free-kick deflected on to the post and Paul Dickov's side displayed a sharp passing game to more than hold their own for long periods. Oldham's composed possession football continued and they were rewarded after 23 minutes when a sweeping team move found Richie Jones in space on the right flank. The former Manchester United trainee picked out Bembo who nodded home. Scunthorpe's final ball let them down continually after the break and when the equaliser came, it was predictably all Forte's own work. The striker outmuscled Jarrett in the air before racing on to the loose ball and dinking neatly beyond Brill. With 12 minutes left Oldham were inches away from a winner when O'Connor hacked Dale Stephens' fizzing free-kick against the post. That near miss prompted a flurry of pressure from Latics, but against the run of play Woolford slammed home from 20 yards after Jarrett had dispossessed Dagnall.
