Shrews stroll on

Shrewsbury continued their impressive start to the season with a 1-0 victory at League One high-flyers Oldham. The home side dominated for long spells but they could have few complaints as Shrewsbury hit the woodwork twice before Steve Leslie grabbed the winner. League Two Shrewsbury were denied after less than three minutes when Matt Harrold met Leslie's corner and saw his header crash back off the bar. Visiting keeper Chris Neal had to dive full length to tip away Deane Smalley's header and Neal also beat out a Dale Stephens free-kick from 25 yards. Smalley glanced off target midway through the half as Oldham began to take control, though Shrewsbury's Jake Robinson flashed an ambitious volley over the top. The Latics, however, were struggling to turn possession into chances and did not threaten again until Paul Black fired at Neal on 63 minutes. Substitute Oumare Tounkara was also denied before the woodwork frustrated Shrewsbury for a second time, with Shane Sherriff's header touched onto the post by keeper Dean Brill. And the Shrews snatched the breakthrough eight minutes from time as Leslie turned sharply on the edge of the box and drilled his shot into the bottom corner. Oldham were a fraction from levelling in stoppage time but Stephens' free-kick shaved the upright.
