Royle warning for Latics squad

Royle made his emotional return to Boundary Park on a short-term contract for the last nine games of the season but he has only one more chance to end an anti-climactic winless run.

Oldham were on course to break their duck against Southend when Neal Eardley converted a penalty yet substitute Lee Barnard equalised within 10 minutes with the game ending 1-1.

And though it is understood 60-year-old Royle will still be offered the job long-term, there is uncertainty over whether he would accept.

"I have been speaking to the chairman and I will speak to him again but, whoever is manager next season, there needs to be changes in the squad," he admitted.

"You start every year ambitious, otherwise there is no point, but what we have at the moment is going to be nearer a relegation fight than a promotion battle."
