Oldham's Jonathan Forte leaves rivals trailing in his wake

Oldham’s leading scorer Jonathan Forte has got his just reward for an excellent start to the season – and a fantastic October – by picking up his first ever fans’ player of the month award.

Despite losing narrowly to leaders Bristol City at the weekend, the Latics are still only two points off third place after a stunning 11-match unbeaten run.

The nomadic striker has been on fire since joining Oldham from Southampton in the summer, with 11 goals in 13 games, and has already beaten his previous best tally for a whole season.

October was particularly productive for Forte who contributed five league goals against Peterborough, Chesterfield, Coventry (2) and Bradford.

Oldham boss Lee Johnson reckons Forte’s sparkling form, and goals, since the start of the season can be attributed to the fact he is enjoying his football again after a series of loan spells.

Boundary Park became Forte’s ninth port of call and two goals on his debut not only endeared him to the fans, but helped him settle from day one. The goals have continued to flow ever since.

"So far he's been excellent and it's down to him," said Johnson. "He spent a good part of his life frustrated at Southampton not doing anything. Sometimes it doesn't matter how much money you are on - it doesn't bring happiness.

"What brings happiness is being valued, performing and being able to look in the mirror and say 'look, I've had a good game today'. I know that from personal experience as a footballer.

"It was very important that he's come in, he's a big player for us. He's got extreme pace, is a good finisher and at the moment he's flying - long may it continue."

Also in contention for the October award were Bristol City pair Kieran Agard and Aaron Wilbraham and Preston’ Joe Garner, but Forte was a clear favourite and worthy winner.
