A Dale Stephens brace handed Paul Dickov a winning start to his managerial career as Oldham defeated Tranmere 2-1 at Prenton Park. The visitors made the brighter start as Warren Feeney saw an early effort turned wide for a corner by home keeper Gunnar Nielson before Lewis Alessandra blazed just over from the edge of the box. The opening goal came on 27 minutes with Stephens wrong-footing Nielson from the edge of the box after Josh Labadie fouled Jason Jarrett. Tranmere were finding it hard create any openings at the Oldham goal but Joss Labadie gave them hope when flashing a header just wide in the 64th minute during a rare period of pressure. However, it was virtually all over in the 82nd minute when Stephens found the left corner from twenty yards when set up by Feeney. Ian Thomas Moore did head a consolation for Tranmere after an 89th minute corner but it came to late to force an equaliser.
