Penney has been under fire from Oldham fans and was jeered for taking off midfielder Dean Furman with the score at 0-0 but he said: "I don't give a monkey's. Our performances have been okay for most of the season and now the results are starting to come as well.
"Winning breeds confidence and you could see from the performance that we aren't lacking that. It was a hard slog but we were the better side.
"The result was the be-all and end-all but we played well once we got going.
"We have three very tough games coming up against Colchester, Leeds and Norwich so it was important to get a positive result."
