Penney making pre-season plans

The Latics' pre-season training is not due to start until June 29, but Penney, who was appointed as Joe Royle's successor just as last season was coming to a close, is keen to run the rule over his new squad. All contracted players have been called to attend five days of training from June 1 and Penney told the club's official website: "I have told the players I want them in for a week in the middle of their break. "We will have an opportunity to assess their fitness and get to know each other before pre-season proper starts on June 29. "This way they can come in for the start of pre-season without nerves and we'll have a better idea of what we've got."
