Smith missing for Latics

Oldham will be without Matt Smith when they host Hartlepool in a vital npower League One relegation clash.

Smith, who scored four goals during Latics' run to the fifth round of this season's FA Cup, jarred his knee during Saturday's 1-0 defeat at Tranmere.

Swelling around the joint raised concerns and the 23-year-old striker will undergo a scan.

Midfielder James Wesolowski is fit to play despite having six stitches in a head wound sustained at the weekend and his presence may mean bench duty once more for club captain Dean Furman.

Cliff Byrne remains a major doubt and the experienced defender had an injection on Monday to help speed up his recovery from ankle ligament damage.

Youssouf M'Changama (knee) remains a long-term injury victim.

Hartlepool manager John Hughes will select his side from an unchanged squad.

Teenage defender Jack Baldwin, operating in midfield in recent weeks, could be ruled out for the rest of the season after damaging medial knee ligaments against Colchester last week.

Nathan Luscombe made his first start of the season in Baldwin's absence in another goalless home draw on Saturday against Yeovil and is expected to continue.

Fellow midfielder Antony Sweeney (knee), who made his first appearance since January when stepping off the bench against Colchester, is pushing for a return to the starting line-up after making a late appearance as a replacement for Jonathan Franks at the weekend.

Hughes has no new injury or suspension problems as his side, beaten only once in their last 10 league matches, look to close the gap on Oldham, immediately above them in the table, to a single point.
