Southend sweep to emphatic win at Oldham

Southend romped to an impressive victory as they won 5-2 at struggling Oldham in Sky Bet League One.

Goals from Jack Payne, David Mooney, David Worrall, Will Atkinson and Luke Prosser sealed the impressive win, against two from Michael Higdon for Oldham.

The visiting Blues went in front after five minutes as Mooney laid off a cross from Ben Coker and the ball was swept inside the far post from 10 yards by Payne.

It was 2-0 in the 43rd minute as Oldham failed to clear a set-piece and, after Kevan Hurst hooked a pass into the box, Mooney forced in from close range.

And they struck again three minutes after the break, with Payne's shot taking a big deflection and looping up for Worrall to nod in at the far post.

Oldham pulled one back after 56 minutes when Joseph Mills set up Higdon to drill in a low 12-yard shot.

Higdon then saw his 77th-minute penalty saved by Daniel Bentley after Mills was fouled by Hurst, but the striker swiftly bagged his second goal of the game with a header from Liam Kelly's cross.

Yet Southend scored straight from the restart as Payne's cross was bundled in by Atkinson and, after 82 minutes, more atrocious Oldham defending gave Prosser a free six-yard header to complete the scoring.
