David Cornell error gifts Colchester first point in 10 games

Colchester ended a run of nine straight League One defeats as they drew 1-1 at fellow strugglers Oldham.

The Us were gifted a point when Chris Porter capitalised on a late blunder by Oldham goalkeeper David Cornell.

Oldham went ahead after only five minutes as a well-worked free-kick saw Mike Jones pick out Danny Philliskirk, whose lay-off was drilled in from eight yards by Rhys Murphy.

Colchester's Marvin Sordell tested Cornell from 20 yards but both sides struggled to make first-half chances in a tight midfield battle.

Oldham almost doubled their lead in the 52nd minute when Jake Cassidy met a Jones set-piece and forced a good save from Colchester keeper Elliot Parish.

Parish also denied Brian Wilson after the centre-back was left unmarked at the far post to head goalwards from a Jones corner.

Colchester levelled on 81 minutes, with Garvan's corner going straight through the hands of Cornell and bouncing in off Porter.

The U's could have snatched victory, but Darren Ambrose's 20-yard drive crashed against the bar.
