Oldham edge Chesterfield to boost League One survival hopes

Oldham boosted their League One survival hopes with a narrow 1-0 win against fellow strugglers Chesterfield.

A late goal by Mike Jones handed victory to John Sheridan's Latics, who moved to within two points of the Spireites but still sit in the relegation zone on goal difference.

Oldham had the better of the chances, with Aaron Amadi-Holloway touching a shot just off target from Matt Palmer's free-kick.

Palmer drilled a low effort wide from 20 yards before Tim Dieng did well to reach a set piece but steered his header beyond the far post.

Chesterfield keeper Tommy Lee denied Oldham the breakthrough after 43 minutes as he reacted sharply to save Curtis Main's 10-yard shot.

It was substitute Jones who opened the scoring after 78 minutes as he received a pass from Palmer, turned 25 yards out and hit a fine shot into the bottom corner.

Timmy Thiele almost doubled the lead moments later when his volley from just inside the box was tipped over by Lee.

Chesterfield enjoyed plenty of late possession, but they did not create a clear chance throughout the game.
