Oldham 0-1 Shrewsbury: Match report

31 August 2010 23:30

Shrewsbury continued their impressive start to the season with a 1-0 victory at League One high-flyers Oldham in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy Northern Section first round.

The home side dominated for long spells but they could have few complaints as Shrewsbury hit the woodwork twice before Steve Leslie grabbed the winner.

The Shrews snatched the breakthrough eight minutes from time as Leslie turned sharply on the edge of the box and drilled his shot into the bottom corner.

Four goals in nine second-half minutes saw Hartlepool ease their way past Northampton with a 4-0 win.

After a goalless first-half the League One hosts steamed past the League Two opposition with a flurry of strikes, with Evan Horwood, Antony Sweeney, Andy Monkhouse and Denis Behan on target.

Vinny Mukendi's solitary goal gave Macclesfield their first win of the season against Morecambe. The teenager stole past the Morecambe defence in the 42nd minute to convert a Tyrone Barnett nod down with a powerful low drive.

Watched by the smallest ever crowd at the Banks' Stadium - just 1,793 - Walsall were knocked out 2-1 by Chesterfield.

Adam Le Fondre's sixth goal of the season gave Rotherham a 1-0 win over Lincoln.

Goals by strike duo Marc Richards and Justin Richards secured Port Vale a place in the next round despite a late bombardment by Rochdale, who they beat 2-1.

Finally, Accrington advanced into the second round with a 5-3 penalty shoot-out victory over Tranmere after the tie finished 1-1 after 90 minutes.
