Latics and Gills in stalemate
Gillingham held on for a 0-0 draw at Oldham to secure their first away point of the season.
Stubborn defending and a fine display by Gills goalkeeper Stephen Bywater frustrated the home side, who were denied their fourth straight victory in league and cup.
Oldham dominated the first-half possession without creating clear chances.
Danny Philliskirk and James Dayton were both kept out by Bywater, while Dayton fired off target from 16 yards out.
Jermaine McGlashan had Gillingham's first opening, but his header from Joe Martin's left-wing cross was straight at the keeper.
Bywater was back in the action just after half-time, blocking Carl Winchester's shot and making a fingertip save from Philliskirk's low drive.
Oldham continued to press, but Dominic Poleon was denied by a last-ditch tackle before Bywater parried a 20-yard effort from Mike Jones.
And Latics debutant Conor Wilkinson - newly signed on loan from Bolton - powered a well-struck volley just over the crossbar.
Gillingham sprung out of defence to go close after 79 minutes, with Cody McDonald forcing an excellent save from Paul Rachubka.
Oldham wasted their final chance in stoppage time when Amari Morgan-Smith missed the target from close range.
