Charity Commision decision gives hope Oldham Council have now received confirmation from the Charity Commission on 30 acres of land to the north of the Lancaster Club, Failsworth where Athletic propose to build their new stadium. After a previous objection the Commission have now stated, "Having considered the papers and spoken to the applicants the Commission concluded that the Park is held on charitable trusts.” The next stage is for a ruling on an application by Oldham Council to the Commission relating to a proposed land exchange which has already been approved by the Failsworth Trust Committee. If the Commission agrees this would allow Oldham Council to proceed with proposals to dispose of this land. Barry Owen, chairman of Trust Oldham, said, “It is good news, but it is only the first stage of the process. We are currently waiting the decision on whether it is possible for the land to be transferred. Boundary Park is dilapidated now and we need a new stadium to make it a seven-day-a-week business. It would allow the modern facilities that are now required of a football club.” Alan Hardy added, “This is an issue between the charity commission, the applicant and the council, and it would be inappropriate for the club to comment on the matter.”
