Long season ahead

Dickov - "We need to start picking up points"

The Latics continued their terrible start to the season when they lost 1-0 at home to Stevenage on Saturday. The game was lack lustre and the home side put in another poor performance to send the fans home in despondent mood and wondering just how the year is going to pan out. On that performance it is going to be a long hard season and the current form is one that is looking relegation straight in the face.Paul Dickov admitted, “We need to start picking up points, and picking them up soon. I know that and am not stupid to think otherwise. I know the fans won’t be happy and will be frustrated. We will roll up our sleeves and go again. Yes we are three games in and haven’t as many points as we would like, but we will put it right.” “I thought we had two stone well penalties for fouls on Matt Smith and Robbie Simpson. We were really tentative in possession as though the players didn’t want to make any individual mistakes. It looked as though they wanted to give the ball to somebody else very quickly which is what we don’t want.” The turning point in the match came in the 33rd minute after Alex Cisak brought down Haber and Akins scored the resulting penalty. Matt Smith started the second half and at least created chances as the Latics looked to up their game. However, the team was still lacking in ideas and couldn't get the ball over enough to create goalscoring chances. On the whole the play moved too much sideways and backwards and it looked at times like a team of crabs were performing. Things need to improve quickly and a result at Portsmouth next week is a must to restore some pride and confidence into the squad and to give the fans some hope for the coming campaign.
