Latics striker tips U's challenge

The Latics host the Essex outfit on Saturday as they aim to return to winning ways after a dismal run of three successive defeats.

Smalley, 21, is wary of the threat posed by Aidy Boothroyd's men and feels they could last the distance in the race for the Championship.

Smalley said: "I think when you go through all the contenders then obviously you've got to look at the likes of Leeds, Charlton, MK Dons and Huddersfield.

"But I think Colchester are a very good side and can see them being right up there at the end of the season.

"They've got some excellent players and a manager with a proven track record, so we know it's going to be a tough game on Saturday."
