Latics display pleases manager
Goals from Danny Whitaker and Lewis Alessandra put the Latics in control by the break while striker Chris O'Grady hit the woodwork on three occasions.
And the performance, in front of a crowd of 817 at Ewen Fields, left Penney beaming as his side claimed victory in their first pre-season outing.
He said: "While it is always good to pick up a win, this stage of the season is all about fitness.
"And on that score I was more than happy. We have been working on our shape in training for the last week and again it looked like things were coming together."
