"I think at some point it is important to start looking forward and not back" Latics director Mike Newton has resigned from the board after one year at the club after deciding that he could not agree on the role he is to perform for next season.Mr. Newton said, "I have enjoyed every minute of my time here and learned a lot about the game, but decided the time is right to move on. I have tremendous respect for the board and appreciate the opportunity they have given me. I would like to thank the fans and the players, as well as the management team, for all their efforts this season. Everyone from the chairman to the tea lady  has shown me, my family and guests the greatest personal courtesy. I wish everyone at the club and the fans all the best for the future." “I joined last July and since then I feel I have given the club good value financially and must have been over eight times from New York. I have done my best to sort out issues and have worked hard for the club and am disappointed I can’t take my involvement further. I think at some point it is important to start looking forward and not back. The club has a fantastic history. But it shouldn’t become a museum. It has to be progressive and not look back all the time or else it will wither on the vine."Commenting on the departure, Latics managing director Simon Corney stated, "The board would like to place on record their appreciation for the work Mike has done and wish him all the best in the future." Alan Hardy added, "We wish Mike well in the future, whatever he decides to do.”
