Latics appoint Penney as new boss

Penney resigned from his position as Quakers boss on Thursday afternoon and will now replace Joe Royle, who earlier this week announced Saturday's league clash at Walsall would be his final game at the Latics helm. The former Quakers boss has been a big success during his two-and-a-half years at Darlington, taking them to the League Two play-off semi-finals last season and coping admirably with the restraints of a 10-point deduction after the club officially entered administration in February. Managing director Simon Corney told the club's official website: "We are delighted to be able to welcome a manager of Dave's calibre to Boundary Park. "He is a very professional and thorough person who ticked all the boxes and who has an excellent track record." Penney still had two years left to run on his Darlington contract but Oldham will not have to pay any compensation due to the Quakers currently being in administration.
