"I have my hunger back" Latics triallist Jason Jarrett has been given a six-month contract after putting in some impressive pre-season performances. With Sean Gregan currently out of contention due to injury, 30 year old Jarrett has been showing some outstanding skills at the heart of the defence and he could be asked to continue the role. Jarrett has been playing from a midfield role and has also been used as a striker during his previous loan spell at Boundary Park.Paul Dickov said of Jarrett, "Jason has been fantastic since joining us initially on trial. I cannot speak too highly of Jason's attitude, ability and fitness which is all you can ask for from a player. He has been offered a short-term deal but, if he continues as he has done so far, it will be extended. Looking at Jason, you would have thought he had played in defence for most of his career. He has looked every bit a centre half. We have a very young team and Jason's experience also helps us." Jarrett almost finished with football and said, "I decided to take a break because I had fallen out of love with the game. I was not enjoying my football and my head was not right. It was a big risk, but I feel better for taking a year out of the game and I have my hunger back. I was wary at first when I was asked to play as a central defender as I had always been a midfield player. If I do well in defence, it will provide another option and it has to be a good thing to be versatile. It is totally different playing at the back as you can see the whole pitch in front of me. I am pleased how it has gone, though Reuben Hazell, who plays alongside me, has helped as has Gerry Taggart, himself a former central defender, on the training pitch."
