Robbie Simpson described the Latics' victory against Liverpool in the FA Cup as one of the highlights of his career. He admitted, "I won at Manchester United with Coventry City in the Carling Cup, but this ranks alongside that. It was a great day for the football club, and not only for the prize money. The lads deserved it because we have had a tough run in the league." "I thought we were outstanding in the first half and when we got a goal early in the second half to go 3-1 ahead we instinctively sat deeper. Liverpool then brought on their captain Steven Gerrard, who is still one of the best players in the world. You could see the difference as soon as he came on. He gave them a lift, but our boys stuck at it and our football was superb towards the end. When the board went up showing six minutes of stoppage time, my heart was pounding, but we managed to hang on. Everyone on the pitch, as well as those in the background, were absolute heroes."
"The gaffer picked a very forward-thinking team with Matt Smith and myself up front with Jose Baxter just behind us. That showed our intent and we just had to deliver for him and, thankfully, we did. It was my first experience of a sold-out Boundary Park and it was brilliant. I just hope they come back for our next league match."
