Cumbrians will be tough - Penney
The Latics drew both league games against the Cumbrians last season, with a goalless draw at Boundary Park in December being followed by a 1-1 draw at Brunton Park in April.
"Carlisle will be a tough ask but it's important we get off to a good start and we will be giving it everything to get through," Penney told the club's official website.
"Brunton Park is never an easy place to go and I've been there several times with my teams.
"They will be looking to bounce back strongly this year and we will have to be at our best to get through.
"The players will see the game as an early opportunity to impress and I'm sure it will be an excellent game."
