Sheridan parted company with the Latics on Sunday after a week of controversy which culminated in a 6-2 hammering at MK Dons on Saturday, and Corney moved quickly to appoint Royle - who previously managed the Latics between 1982 and 1994 - until the the end of the season. "We needed someone to come into the club quickly to lift the mood of the supporters and with Joe Royle's history here there was no-one better," Corney told the Manchester Evening News. Royle has already begun work at Boundary Park by sending two loan players back to their parent clubs. Middlesbrough defender Seb Hines and Hartlepool goalkeeper Jan Budtz have both returned to the North-East after Royle decided against renewing their deals. Fellow loanee Dean Windass will enter discussions with Hull regarding his Boundary Park future after he was left out of the squad that travelled to the stadium:mk at the weekend.
