Byfield shown the door at Oldham
The 32-year-old joined the Latics on a short-term deal earlier this month and made four appearances, but failed to find the net.
Manager Dave Penney has since brought in Nick Blackman on loan from Blackburn, meaning Byfield's opportunities would be limited.
"We'd like to thank Darren for his efforts while with us," said Penney.
"However, we need to channel our team's resources and the style we play in a different direction."
