Veteran Czech Republic international Jan Koller improved Nurnberg's chances of beating the drop by scoring the only goal of Sunday's match against Wolfsburg.
The vital strike came with 11 minutes left and was created by Tomas Galasek.
The 35-year-old Czech midfielder crossed for his compatriot to beat Alexander Madlung before firing home.
The three points lift Nurnberg off the foot of the Bundesliga table, while Wolfsburg remain seventh.
