Spireites: 'Hands off Lester'
The Magpies, who were taken over by Middle East consortium Munto Finance this week, made the bid for the prolific forward on Thursday morning.
But within hours of the approach Chesterfield have issued a firm hands-off warning to their rivals.
"I can confirm that an offer was made by Notts County but the figures they were talking about are derisory and some may even feel an insult to the worth of a player like Jack Lester," said Spireites chairman Barrie Hubbard.
"I am particularly angry that this enquiry has been made public as it only serves to unsettle our fans and maybe the player involved at a time when we are preparing for the new season."
Manager John Sheridan added: "I don't want Jack Lester going anywhere as I want him scoring goals for Chesterfield to help us with a promotion push.
As far as other clubs are concerned it is simply a case of 'hands off' as he is a Chesterfield player."
Lester, 33, has scored 50 goals in 80 appearances for the Spireites since moving to Saltergate from Nottingham Forest in the summer of 2007 and only signed a new contract with the Derbyshire club in June.
