Short to use fringe players

Notts County boss Craig Short will hand run-outs to some of his squad players when the Magpies travel to League One rivals Plymouth in the Carling Cup first round. Craig Westcarr could be one such beneficiary after the winger came on as a second-half substitute during the opening-day defeat to Huddersfield on Saturday. Goalkeeper Rob Burch and forward Ben Burgess are doubts after sustaining knocks against the Terriers and may not be risked. If that was the case, Stuart Nelson would start in goal with Karl Hawley, Jake Jervis and Kevin Smith battling it out for the right to replace Burgess. Defenders Mike Edwards and Krystian Pearce and midfielder Jon Spicer could also be in line for starting roles after only making the bench against Huddersfield.
