Short: Management is different

Craig Short knows he will be judged on his achievements as Notts County manager and not the success he enjoyed with the club as a player. The former defender won back-to-back promotions to the old First Division with the Magpies during three seasons at Meadow Lane, and scored on the club's first appearance at Wembley when they beat Tranmere in the Third Division play-off final in 1990. He made 158 appearances for Notts before leaving to join Derby for £2.5million in 1992 - a fee that still remains a club record. Short, whose managerial reign has started with two league defeats, said: "I know I am going to be judged on my results as a manager now, not what I achieved here as a player. "I am more ambitious as a manager than I was as a player. When I was a player it all seemed to happen for me. I came to Notts and had success and got a move to Derby, then went to Everton and Blackburn. I was fortunate in my career, but I never pushed myself. "This is a new chapter in my life and I want to do well here. I am not using the club as a stepping-stone."
