Short: It was all hands to the pump

Notts County manager Craig Short admitted his side rode their luck during their 2-1 win over Watford in the second round of the Carling Cup. The Magpies were outplayed in the first half but Ben Davies' 30-yard screamer and Kevin Smith's header sent them into the third round for the first time in four years. Watford debutant Troy Deeney halved the deficit with his 78th-minute goal, but County held on. Short said: "When you go and play away in a game like this against higher opposition you're going to have to hold out, you're going to have players manning the pumps, you're going to have to defend well. "They had good chances. John Thompson produced two miraculous tackles. We had last-ditch tackles, we had a goalkeeper on form. "We're not going to come here and roll them over 3-0 and have it all our own way. I knew we had to ride our luck. "The goal settled us down. It was something to hold on to. Scoring first, it's so important and then we showed an incredible amount of resilience. I'm proud of them."
