Late Liam Noble strike gives Notts County long-awaited home win

Notts County secured their first home win in 2016 and first under new manager Mark Cooper, as Liam Noble's stunner secured a 1-0 victory over Stevenage.

The Magpies had not won at Meadow Lane since December and that run looked to be continuing against a Stevenage side slowly picking up under new boss Darren Sarll.

Chances were at a premium for both sides throughout a turgid encounter in Sky Bet League Two, with the tie eventually settled 10 minutes from time by Noble.

Earlier, Jon Stead thought he had given Notts the lead late on in the first half when he struck a sumptuous volley from Noble's centre, but he was flagged for offside.

Stevenage also had a chance to take the lead when a free-kick from Chris Whelpdale was met by Fraser Franks on the volley, which was superbly kept out by goalkeeper Scott Loach.

The second half produced very little by way of entertainment, before Noble popped up to fire a superb shot from just inside the box into the far corner, as a Notts win took them further clear of the relegation zone.
