Strikes from Ben Davies and Kevin Smith gave Notts County a surprise 2-1 victory over npower Championship side Watford in the second round of the Carling Cup. The League One side were thoroughly outclassed in the first half but Davies' 30-yard screamer followed by Smith's header sent County into the third round for the first time in four years. Debutant Troy Deeney ensured a nervy finale with his 78th-minute goal but County held on to claim a cup scalp. The Magpies took the lead on 46 minutes when Davies' superb 30-yard free-kick whistled into the bottom corner of the net to leave the home fans stunned. Craig Short's men were no longer on the back-foot and Smith doubled the advantage in the 67th minute as substitute Craig Westcarr's chip into the box was headed in by the County striker. Deeney halved the deficit with a goal on his debut 12 minutes from time when he headed in Danny Graham's cross, meanwhile Marvin Sordell was again foiled by Nelson as County claimed the win.
