Gareth Taylor started his career at Southampton but never made the breakthrough and joined Bristol Rovers. He had an impressive 2 seasons there and joined Crystal palace for £1.25m but he moved on to Sheffield United after only 6 months with Palace. He scored 26 goals for the Blades and signed for Man City for £400,000 in 1998. he went on loan to Port Vale, QPR and Burnley before making his move to Burnley permanent. He made 90 appearances and scored 33 goals for the Club and was snapped up by Nottingham Forest in 2003 where he stayed until 2005 before joining Crewe on loan in 2006 until the end of the season.
