Nottingham Forest manager Colin Calderwood was a relieved man after seeing his side secure a first win of the season with a 2-0 victory at Port Vale.
An own goal and a late Luke Chambers effort secured three points at Vale Park and eased the pressure on Calderwood.
He said afterwards: "This victory was all about commitment and determination. My players were brave and stood up to be counted.
"We had one or two marvellous performances out there. I don't name names for praise or criticism, but I think most people will realise who they are.
"It was certainly a great effort from our back four, who remained solid right to the end. We have now given ourselves something to build on.
"We all know there is a vast improvement to come from us, but I saw some good signs."
