Nottingham Forest manager Colin Calderwood is determined not to rush summer signing Joe Garner back to full fitness.
The 20-year-old striker, who moved to the City Ground from Carlisle United in a £1.14million deal two months ago, is still recovering from a serious knee operation.
However, Calderwood told Forest's official website: "Joe's doing really well - there are very positive signs from a test he had this week which puts him way ahead of schedule.
"He's had a week away with a bit of sun and is almost ready to effectively start what will be his pre-season.
"That will be four weeks and then in the two or three weeks after that he'll get into a bit of football and we'll see where we are after that.
"We've got to progress him quite gradually. There's no use opening the gate and let him go full tilt because we've got to be very aware of any tightness in his hamstrings or calves."
