Championship leaders Nottingham Forest survived a stern examination from Sheffield Wednesday to maintain their unbeaten start with a 1-0 win at Hillsborough on Saturday.
Stuart Pearce's side made it four wins from five league games and ended Wednesday's own undefeated record through former Arsenal midfielder Henri Lansbury's 37th-minute header.
But after Lansbury's goal, the Owls put up a strong rally in a bid to get back into the game, with striker Stevie May going close three times and Forest goalkeeper Karl Darlow producing fine saves to deny Chris Maguire and Atdhe Nuhiu.
"I'm pleased how we stand at this moment in time, but my message is we have to improve," Pearce said.
"There are four or five areas of the game we can get better at and the players realise that.
"The more demands I put on the players and the more they put on themselves, the more we will improve."
Forest are one point ahead of second-placed Watford, who survived the dismissal of Gabriel Tamas to beat Huddersfield Town 4-2 at Vicarage Road.
Tamas was sent off for his second booking with the score at 2-2 in the 65th minute, but after that Keith Andrews put Watford ahead and Almen Abdi's second goal of the day finished off Huddersfield.
Prior to that, Watford's Troy Deeney and Abdi had seen their goals cancelled out by Harry Bunn and Murray Wallace.
"I'm very happy for the result because I saw a team made by men today, great men," Watford manager Beppe Sannino said.
"It's the first time for me that I've seen this amount of commitment and effort from my lads. I saw my face on the pitch today."
Nouha Dicko and Bakary Sako combined to ensure Wolverhampton Wanderers celebrated 125 years of league football at Molineux with a 3-1 win over Blackburn Rovers.
Dicko opened the scoring before Sako helped himself to a double as Kenny Jackett's third-placed side collected their fourth win from five games in the match the club had earmarked to commemorate the landmark.
The duo put Wolves two goals ahead before Jordan Rhodes gave Blackburn a lifeline from the penalty spot, but his side could not build on that with Sako sealing his brace to sentence Blackburn to a second defeat in three games.
Norwich City striker Lewis Grabban scored against his old club Bournemouth, but Callum Wilson, the forward bought to replace him in the close-season, salvaged a 1-1 draw for the visitors at Carrow Road.
At the other end of the table, struggling Fulham picked up their first point of the season in a 1-1 draw against Cardiff City at Craven Cottage.
Tim Hoogland broke the deadlock for the Cottagers, but Kenwyne Jones equalised in the 55th minute to leave Fulham still in the bottom three following their relegation to the second tier along with Cardiff last season.
Blackpool are the only team below Fulham after losing 2-1 at Millwall, with Scott McDonald and Scott Malone on target for the Lions before Nile Ranger netted for the visitors, who have lost all five league matches.
Stephen Warnock netted the only goal as managerless Leeds United edged out struggling Bolton Wanderers 1-0 at Elland Road following David Hockaday's sacking after just six matches in charge.
Wigan Athletic thrashed Birmingham City 4-0, Derby County shared a 1-1 draw with Ipswich Town, while Brighton and Hove Albion drew 2-2 with unbeaten Charlton Athletic.
Reading won 1-0 at Middlesbrough and Brentford beat Rotherham United 2-0 in a battle between two clubs promoted from League One last season.
