The experienced defender played a key role in Forest's survival last season but has failed to force his way back into the first team picture at the Britannia Stadium.
After making seven summer signings the Potters are set to send Higginbotham out on loan along with Michael Tonge, Diego Arismendi, Mama Sidibe and Wilson Palacios.
City Ground boss Sean O'Driscoll will be well aware of Higginbotham's qualities after his spell working with Steve Cotterill but has of course strengthened his defence considerably since taking charge in the summer.
