Bennett targets October return
The 24-year-old has been sidelined since suffering knee ligament damage on Boxing Day last year and has yet to play under manager Billy Davies.
Bennett has recently started light running but is aiming to join in with the rest of the squad in the coming weeks.
"I am just back jogging but I still need to get some strength back in my knee. I am working on that then after the next international break in October hopefully I can step things up again," Bennett told the Nottingham Evening Post.
"I have stepped up things ever so slightly in the last few weeks and there has not been a reaction, so I just have to keep things steady. I have to focus my mind a little bit to make sure I do not push things too much.
"But hopefully next month I can get back with the rest of the lads - that is my target."
