Back to the beginning for Forest

Saturday's game with Barnsley is the reverse fixture to the opening day of the season

The sun was in the air at the City Ground but a crowd of nearly 23,000 had their worst fears about the campaign ahead confirmed by a goalless draw in which the Reds struggled to create chances.

Any optimism generated by the ambitious appointment of Steve McClaren as manager had already begun to fade away with the new boss making clear that unless he was given more backing in the transfer market then a promotion push was a non-starter.

At that stage however few would have backed a side who had come within touching distance of the Premier League in the previous two seasons to be embroiled in a relegation battle.

Barnsley boss Keith Hill certainly didn't, telling his official club website this week that Forest are in a 'false position' in the league.
