Sporting Lisbon sell Ricky van Wolfswinkel to Norwich
Financially-crippled Portuguese club Sporting Lisbon have sold Dutch striker Ricky van Wolfswinkel to Premier League outfit Norwich in order to pay overdue wages to players and staff, media reported Thursday.
The 24-year-old will link up with the 'Canaries' for next season after the two clubs agreed a transfer fee in the region of 10 million euros, a 35% profit on the 5.4 million they paid for the player from Dutch club FC Utrecht in 2011.
The striker has plundered 39 goals in 81 matches for the capital club but with debts in the region of 260 million euros, the former champions had no choice but to offload their prized asset.
The team have already dismissed two head coaches this season and are languishing in the unfamiliar position of 10th place in the top flight as unbeaten Benfica set the pace at the top.
