Norwich City striker Jamie Cureton has revealed his surprise at being asked to captain the side for Saturday's 1-0 win over Barnsley.

Cureton, 32, was making his first appearance since having his appendix removed earlier in the month and was handed the captain's armband in place of the suspended Mark Fotheringham.

The veteran striker also scored the only goal of the game in the 26th minute.

"Being named captain gave me a real boost," he told the club's official website.

"It was a bit of a shock when the manager came up and tapped me on the shoulder and said 'do you think you can lead the team out?'

"It's the first time I've ever done it in my career and it's a real proud moment.

"I feel really sharp and in a strange way the operation has helped me a bit as I've had a bit of time to recharge the batteries."
