Canaries win Doherty appeal
10 Feb 2009 - 14:47:22
Norwich City have successfully appealed the red card shown to Gary Doherty during Saturday's 2-1 defeat to Bristol City.
The Canaries had asked the Football Association to consider rescinding the red card shown to the defender in the 44th minute of the match for a professional foul on Robins striker Dele Adebola.
Referee Andy D'Urso also awarded the visitors a penalty, but the Canaries have been heartened by the news that Doherty will now be available for next weekend's trip to Preston.
"This shows the appeal system works. I wasn't convinced it was a sending off. Gary played the ball but, from the referee's positioning, it was a sending-off and a penalty kick," manager Bryan Gunn told the club's official website.
"They've had a chance to look at it again and it's fallen in our favour.
"It won't bring us points but we'll have an influential figure available for the next game and we're delighted about that.
"I want to thank the FA committee for making the time to look at it."
