Norwich City have allowed John Hartson to end his loan spell ahead of schedule, with new boss Glenn Roeder setting his sights on signing a striker from the Premier League.
The veteran Wales international was due to return to West Bromwich Albion after Saturday's Championship clash with Plymouth Argyle.
But Roeder has told the 32-year-old frontman that he is free to leave immediately after his two starts while at Carrow Road.
Meanwhile, the Canaries boss is hoping to sign a replacement striker on loan from the top-flight.
He told the club's official website: "We came very close (to a signing) yesterday.
"I know that 'close' is no good, but we came very close to getting a striker that would have made people sit up and take notice
"I still think we might be able to get this player, but not just yet.
"He's got a record of a goal every three games in the Premiership and he's still young."
