Norwich City have signed former Spain international defender Juan Velasco on an initial three-month deal.
The 30-year-old had impressed while on trial at Carrow Road and has done enough to earn a longer-term stay with Glenn Roeder's squad.
Velasco won four caps for his country earlier on in his career, having played club football with Sevilla, Celta Vigo, Athletico Madrid and Espanyol.
Canaries boss Roeder moved for Velasco after seeing loanee Matthew Bates return to Middlesbrough due to a serious knee injury.
The 21-year-old has undergone two operations on his troublesome knee in the last 18 months and faces another lengthy spell on the sidelines.
Boro boss Gareth Southgate told his club's official website: "Unfortunately it does look like it might be quite serious.
"But it's really sad for everyone at the club, because he's had such a long battle back."
