Holt may miss first fixture due to trial

Norwich striker Grant Holt could miss the opening fixture of the new season after magistrates refused to postpone his trial on a motoring offence. Holt is due to stand trial at Market Drayton Magistrates' Court in north Shropshire on Friday, the same day as his team's televised npower Championship opener against Watford. Holt, who denies failing to give the identity of a vehicle's driver, will face a journey of more than 200 miles to Norwich after the case is complete in order to make the 7.45pm kick-off. The 29-year-old, who has also played for Nottingham Forest, Sheffield Wednesday and Shrewsbury, is alleged to have failed to provide West Mercia Police with information relating to a Peugeot 307 in May 2009. Magistrates were asked earlier this week to postpone the case in order to allow Holt to play against Watford, but they rejected the request - which was opposed by the prosecution.
