Gunn apologises to Canaries fans
The Canaries were 5-0 down at the break, with strikers Kevin Lisbie and Clive Platt both scoring twice as their first season at League One level for nearly 50 years started in disastrous fashion.
And two late goals from substitutes David Perkins and Scott Vernon went on to condemn the hosts to their heaviest home defeat of all time, surpassing a 6-1 defeat against Bournemouth in 1946.
"I would like to start by apologising to all our supporters," said Gunn, who was confronted by two fans on the pitch after Colchester had gone 4-0 up.
"If any players had been interviewed by the press, they should start by apologising too.
"There were some individuals' mistakes out there, but basically we have not defended well as a team and had been severely punished for it. We have now got to rebuild the face of the fans in what we are trying to achieve here. It has been severely dented, we know that, and we have just got to make sure we put things right, starting at Yeovil on Tuesday."
